Real life home

We kicked off our first real life home shoot for Pretty Nostalgic magazine last weekend with a visit to a particularly inspiring home in south Wales. We turned up to meet retired art teacher, Sue, armed with intriguingly pink fizzy pop, a selection of handmade Scotch eggs, an excitable photographer and a bundle of really rather heavy 1970s lights. It was our first shoot for the magazine and we were all beaming. You’ll have to wait until the feature comes out in issue one (on sale 1 May) to read the full story but here are just a few of photo highlights from this wonderfully eclectic home: …which pretty much sums up the sort of homes we’re hoping to feature in Pretty Nostalgic. We want to seek out homes that are filled with life. Heartfelt, lived in lodgings that have been broken in and are more beautiful for it. We don’t like tidy – we like chaotic and unique, eclectic and charming; homes filled with contrasts, wall-to-wall collections and colour. Homes that are lived in by resourceful and inventive folk – people who reuse lost and found items to make wonderful new things; people who take pride in British makers and handmade flourishes and, most of all, people who make the most of what they’ve got rather than buying new things. As you can see, we’re pretty excited to show you what we mean – so draw a big circle around 1 May, when issue one of Pretty Nostalgic goes on sale. And please get in touch if you’d like to invite us round for a cuppa (perhaps a Scotch egg too, if you’re lucky) and a chance to explore your home. Quirky, creative homes float our boat. And, talking of boats, we’re also on the look out for barges, houseboats, treehouses, horseboxes and hobbit homes. Write to us and tell us about what makes your space special and we’ll share it with the world – all in the name of inspiring others to live differently. |

Where are the handmade scotch eggs from?
They’re made by the Handmade Scotch Egg Company, http://www.handmadescotcheggs.co.uk/, but we picked them up at our lovely local deli in Cowbridge. This one is called Black Watch and is made with black pudding one…
I shall certainly be buying your magazine. I’ve always enjoyed reading magazines with features about people’s homes but during the last few years have found them increasingly disappointing. I’m fed up with seeing white walls and cream carpets and kitchens that don’t look as though anyone has ever cooked a meal in there.
Good luck with your new venture. I’m looking forward to sharing it with you.
So fed up of homes without soul. And a little sick of the reproduction ‘vintage’ in the shops right now. For me home represents the people who live there; it is a powerful way of asserting identity. But more than anything, it is the place I always want to come back to.
I wish you huge success and I will be watching this space.
I recently won your book – Pretty Nostalgic Home in a giveaway in Making Magazine. It’s brilliant and can’t wait to see more! Thank goodness you have a magazine I can get hold of!
